I finished reading your book in the afternoon! I was sorry to be finished as I got so sucked in with Charles, Rosetta, Bianca, and Jason, particularly towards the end, and wanted more! I hope you feel proud of the book. It's a gift and an art to be able to write with such authenticity and clarity, and to keep the reader so gripped!

I read your book - it is wonderful writing, a powerful story, and complex central characters! I do not know if you deliberately planned it this way, but your story itself is like the metaphor that you use: moving water. The reader is at first borne on the surface - I think this is why your book is NOT a 9/11 novel, because it is only backdrop to it - and only gradually finds out how "deep" the story is.

I love how you handle reality, how the plot you wove did not shy away from the brutality of all the systemic isms, disease, and the general curveballs of living, but it also offered complexity, love, joy, and just enough redemption to hang on to (like a subway loop strap).

You know, it’s not difficult to get into a book that starts off with evil militia, hell-spawn, or denizens from Planet X attacking. This book isn’t like that; however, I found myself interested in the people and by the end I was deeply concerned in what was happening to at least the characters in Marshall’s story. I like the fact that there’s not a lot of fluff in this book, her writing is tight and the conflict was dramatic without the melo. I enjoyed her dialogue a lot and I appreciated the occasional snippet of social commentary that wasn’t preachy.
As a friend pointed out it was a quick read that was hard to put down. She’s right you can read this in the time it would take to binge a limited television series. Is it worth the time? Oh yeah!

I usually prefer to read non fiction
Why I loved your book:
It was written by you!
Takes place in NYC
Very compelling read. Each chapter ending made me want to read the next to hear what’s going on with next named character
Loved the NMRK card!
Many novels rush to wrap up all story lines at the end. Yours did not do that. The end was not predictable or saccharine. Not every detail was wrapped up at all. Very satisfying and savory

Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying your book! I'm fascinated by how it portrays the archetypal American black man--the misunderstood survivor/academic of an oppressive past with some good memories, and yet the centerpin of such a unique love story...This is a story only you could have written, as it manages to be satisfying, self-referential, and universal at the same time.

I'm writing to report that i received my copy of Deep Rivers a few days ago and i can't put it down. I thought you might like to know.

I finished reading Deep Rivers earlier today. It is terrific! The characters are real and their stories are compelling. I didn’t want it to end. Are you going to write a sequel? Does Bianca have leukemia? What happens to her? Jason comes home, but do he and Charles reconcile? Does Rosetta stay with her abusive husband?
